You Mac users have heard it countless times . . . "make friends with PC user and update your device software." Now you don't have to make nice with a PC user when upgrading your device software. Garmin recently released the beta version of the WebUpdater for Mac:
Now you can update your device software at your own convenience. We recommend that all Garmin customers run the WebUpdater every few months to ensure that you have the latest and greatest features on your GPS device. It REALLY does help.

I’m sure it does help generally. Unfortunately last time I ran the web updater it updated my Garmin Edge 305 so well that it won’t switch on at all and will have to go in for repair :-(.

I had pretty much the same problem as Karen but with a Forerunner 305 - I ran the Mac version of the webupdate and it turned my GPS into a brick which had to be sent back.
Be very careful with firmware updates!

Hi folks,
I'm very sorry to learn of these problems. I'm forwarding this off to the guys at device support so they have some idea of what's happening out there.

I had the same problem with my Garmin Edge 305, but I managed to fix it without contacting Garmin or sending it back in. Seems like the problem isn't with the Mac software, since PC users also have the trouble with their WebUpdater. Anyhow, I fixed it by first doing a hard reset of the EDGE, NOT turning it back on, and then re-updating the GPS firmware. (Hard reset is 1) plug it in, 2) turn it off, 3) press reset while turning on... )
Now my Edge reads Software Version 3.10 and GPS 2.90. Yah!

If you are experiencing any problems with the Mac WebUpdater, please send in the steps to reproduce the problem to mac.webupdater.200beta (at) garmin.com.
Here are some things to try before sending the device to Garmin:
If the device does not start up or respond to key strokes, press lap and mode buttons at the same time to reset the device. Make sure the device is charged before doing this.
If the device displays the message “Software Missing”, try doing the update again.
If the update continues to fail, please try to do the update on a PC.

My update to 2.6 using the latest web updater went without a hitch. Thanks for supporting Mac. Now just bring our software to the same level as the PC! :)
