UPDATE: Garmin Connect will open it's doors to all Garmin fitness devices on May 26, 2009. Read more...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
With 2008 coming to a close, it’s time for an update. Unfortunately, we must report that we won’t be hitting our December target for migration.
We have been working hard to complete this migration before the end of the year while improving the overall feature set of Garmin Connect. To do this, the teams in San Francisco and Olathe, Kansas have been focused on bringing in the right hardware and database software to ensure the migration of activities from MotionBased to Garmin Connect runs smoothly while maintaining data integrity.
As of December 18, we have accomplished the following tasks for migration:
- Installed new hard drive to store all activities at Garmin Connect
- Optimized hard drive to ensure data integrity
- Migrated all MotionBased activities to a test server to begin testing
What’s left to do before migration:
- Identify bugs and make changes to Garmin Connect code (4 weeks remaining)
- Migrate all MotionBased activities to the production server (4 weeks of transfer time)
The reason the transfer will take 4 weeks is because MotionBased has approximately 5+ million activities on 2+ terabytes of disk space. Each activity must be exported from the test server and imported into the live system.
Based on this 4 week transfer time and the 4 weeks of testing/code fixes, our revised migration date is late February 2009.
We hesitated to update you on this delay until we could be very confident with the new date. This was predicated on the success of installing and partitioning our new storage drive which successfully passed our tests today.
A few reminders…
Once the migration is complete, Garmin Connect will accept data from all current MotionBased customers and MotionBased-compatible USB devices.
MotionBased will be available for upload until the final transition day. After that, it will be available as a read-only site for fitness devices and read-write-upload site for devices not supported on Garmin Connect.
Mac Support - Mac support for the ANT Agent -- used for the Forerunner 50 and 405 -- is now projected for the first quarter of 2009. We are currently testing the beta software with solid results. However, it still needs more rigorous testing before it goes live.
Thank you once again for your patience during this involved procedure. We are excited to be at this stage of development and will keep you posted on further progress.
The MotionBased/Garmin Connect Team
Not to make the conversion to simplistic, but is there a way you could flag activities with a field in your database to be exported to Garmin's database. You could write a service that migrates new records over to Garmin's database while still keeping MotionBased live and having the data redundant. At whatever point you are satisfied with the data in Garmin's database and the users are comfortable, all uploads can be streamed directly to Garmin and you could unplug the MotionBased side.
So. Now's the 9th of February. I'm really looking forward to Mac-support for ANT.
So where is it, Garmin?
The delays for a decent online solution are frustrating, but hardly the end of the world (at least for PC users).
I have been using SportTracks instead of the Garmin-supplied software. Works brilliantly. And it is free. My 305 is a wonderful running tool, and combined with decent software it is perfect for my needs.
I remain hopeful that the new online offering from Garmin will have similar functionality to SportTracks - the best of both worlds.
It's there! Hurrah. Found it by the magic of Twitter:
umm no http://tinyurl.com/4rnexr links back to this and the date from that post is Dec 18th, and doesn't mention Feb 9th (come and gone btw) as a release date.
wait! so is this IT?!?!
Not sure what you are referring to by IT. We announced support for uploads from the Forerunner 50 and 405 for Mac users on Garmin Connect yesterday. We have not migrated MotionBased to Garmin Connect, yet.
So, we're now in "late February". When will the transition to Garmin Connect be completed?
Best regards,
A frustrated 305 customer
Do you really believe that they are pulling it off? You may believe in the tooth fairy as well.
For my part, I have stopped using MB and found that http://bimactive.com does exactly what I need. I only came back here today for a laugh. I have not seen such a level of incompetence in my whole professional career as displayed by MB.
Heck, at this point I would just be happy if they would make GarminConnect compatible with my 305 so I can start uploading my new data. I can understand the huge database transfer being a pain but I'm a little confused why current devices can't be supported now. It's all Garmin right?
Any news on the migration?
Posted by: Bill Hathaway | February 25, 2009 at 09:49 AM
So it is the end of February, and no updates on the migration... and most of all, the GARMIN CONNECT site is nowhere near competitive to the Motionbased site. Please, please please make Garmin Connect the exact same as motionbased. Youcan barely navigate the site because of how slow it operates. I hope the transition magically makes the site better, but as of now it is so cumbersome, that it would actually drive me to stop using the website.
Please do not disappoint, why not just change motionbased URL to garminconnect.com?
Well, Garmin... I'm definitely looking forward to trying out Garmin Connect : )
I figured maybe the site would just work quietly now for older devices (I have an Edge 305) and it just wasn't being advertised yet. I tried uploading some data to it today, and although it all uploaded fine (could see all the activities on the device, the times, distances, etc.), it said there was a failure and that my device was not supported by Garmin Connect. It's basically what I expected, but... couldn't hurt to try. Oh well. All the same, I'm itching to see what it looks like, and what the differences from MotionBased will be.
Any update from the Garmin/MB folks? I'd understand if things were moving slower than expected, but... still would be nice to know where things are at : )
Eric,
psstttttt don't ask complicated questions, they are optimizing hardisks! This is a very tricky task.
Late Februrary, eh? It's now March 1st and still no data transferred from Motionbased to Garmin Connect and no support for the Forerunner 305 on Garmin Connect. You are validating all of the more cynical comments above after your previous announcement. It's frustrating, even more so as there is no update or explanation on the status from your team, after having pushed back the deadline so many times. It's not only a poor technical but also a poor user communication performance. The Forerunner is a good product (this is my 2nd Forerunner 305) and could be awesome with a complimentary online tool to match - without this my next purchase may be another product.
..."may be another product."? At least for me it WILL be another product.
what's wrong with your forum? where is it?
Posted by: upset user | March 01, 2009 at 10:32 AM
It is late February 2009.
Actually it is March already and I guess we are waiting for the next delay announcement... right Garmin?
Posted by: d | March 01, 2009 at 03:00 PM
It is now March. At least an update on the fact that you have FAILED to meet this new deadline would be polite.
Posted by: chris horn | March 01, 2009 at 03:35 PM
Does Not Compute. Calendar says March. Garmin didn't unveil Garmin Connect.
Posted by: Ryan | March 01, 2009 at 08:01 PM
Well, Well, Well.......
It looks like another failed deadline, any chance of handing out the next ETA for let’s say..... 3 months this time....? but this time I will be putting a few $$$$ on it so at least I can than upgrade my edge 305 to a new 705 so I can start using this promised site.
Any way guys, I hope the drive array setup wasn’t to stressful, and hope the next stage off loading the O/S, drivers and configuring the backend to be less stressful..... Oh wait that is usually harder than setting up the drives and RAID configuration.... oh dear, maybe lest make the next ETA 6 months, then if they do finish early we will all be happy.
Sorry, but this is getting ridicules..... :(
